year with a little explanation on why we believe what we believe. Here goes:
Eduardo's Predictions
Hassan's Predictions
Predictions of both
Best Picture
La La Land
Arrival
Lion
Hell or High Water
Hidden Figures
Moonlight
Hacksaw Ridge
Manchester by the Sea
Fences
The movie has gotten much hate recently for being overrated, but it
does deserve the award. When considering Best Picture, you have to take into consideration
production, acting, dialogue and much more. And, whether you agree or not, La La Land has the
best combination of all those factors (proven by all the nominations), and will subsequently win.
It would be a major surprise if it lost.
No movie has recently had this much love and attention, from the cinematography to score, from the directing to the acting, its is heavily praised. This movie has gotten attention all around for everything and even if it doesn't win every category, it is still the best one generally.

Best Actor
Andrew Garfield - Hacksaw Ridge
Ryan Gosling - La La Land
Denzel Washington - Fences
Casey Affleck - Manchester by the Sea
Viggo Mortensen - Captain Fantastic
Unfortunately, even if Ryan Gosling is really playing those piano keys, Denzel and
Casey have simply too much momentum. Although Casey has won most of the awards leading
up the Oscars (except the coveted SAG award), I predict that Denzel Washington will win Best
Actor. Yes, he did a magnificent job, but I also think a big part of his win is the #OscarsSoWhite
controversy. As a result of it, membership was overhauled and one year later (this year) the
highest amount of black actors were nominated. I believe that the same people that made those
nominations happen will rally behind Denzel Washington and make him the first African
American actor to have three Academy Awards.
Casey Affleck has won everything until now and will without a doubt win this. He is the popular vote all around and critics are all saying he is in the lead. I personally believe he will win because not only was his performance amazing but it outclasses the others. Ryan did an amazing job but it wasn;t the most memorable role. Andrew Garfield is honestly good but I didn't even think it was good enough for a nomination. Viggo is kind of forgettable to be honest. Denzel might be the only other person who might win other than Casey but I still believe Casey will win.

Best Actress
Emma Stone - La La Land
Isabelle Huppert - Elle
Ruth Negga - Loving
Meryl Streep - Florence Foster Jenkins
Natalie Portman - Jackie
Easy, this award will go to Emma Stone for her portrayal of Mia in La La Land.
This is a no-brainer since she has won every major award indicator of Oscar success. This is also
heightened by the fact that her biggest contender should’ve been Viola Davis, who opted to go
for the Best Supporting Actress award instead.
Honestly, this is barely a competition and just saying, if anyone else wins, it might make me mad. The closest person to Emma is probably Ruth Negga with her amazing performance in Loving. Emma, though, made her character likeable, enjoyable and relatable. Add to that the amazing scenes, singing and acting and she is the frontrunner for sure.

Best Director
Mel Gibson - Hacksaw Ridge
Barry Jenkins - Moonlight
Kenneth Lonergan - Manchester by the Sea
Denis Villeneuve - Arrival
Damien Chazelle - La La Land
Many worthy directors are in this list, although I personally believe Oliver Stone
should’ve been nominated. Damien Chazelle has the most momentum going at this point, and
when your movie gets nominated for 14 Oscars, there is little doubt to why. I predict he will get
the award, although I wouldn’t be surprised if Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) won instead.
Although I believe that Chazelle is probably the front runner for a lot of people, Denis Villeneuve shows the most talent. Chazelle is a good director but that's not why people love him, they love him for La La Land because of its writing. Its very important here not to confuse the two. Talent-wise and movie-wise, it's Villeneuve followed by Jenkins.

Best Original Screenplay
La La Land
Hell or High Water
The Lobster
Manchester by the Sea
20th Century Woman
This is a tough one. La La Land and Manchester By the Sea are in a
tough competition and the answer is not certain. This is why in this case, I focus on the actual
screenplay. Most of the glory La La Land gets is for its production, acting and homage to past
musicals, while Manchester By the Sea is known for being a gripping emotional tale of loss and
redemption. That last part shouts Academy Award, doesn't it? The award is going to Manchester
by the Sea.
Without a doubt, this is going to La La Land. The movie is loved for the feeling it sets and the feeling it sets comes from the screenplay itself. The screenplay sets up good roles, good stories and great times all around. The fact that it is a musical is a big plus since it is the first one nominated in a long time. A win here is just going to happen.

Best Writing Adapted Screenplay
Arrival
Lion
Hidden Figures
Moonlight
Fences
The Academy Awards have a history of dividing awards so that
everyone gets some Oscar glory. Last year serves as a good example: instead of giving both Best
Picture and Best Director to one, the Academy gave the former to Spotlight and the latter to The
Revenant (everyone wins!). This year, La La Land will (probably) beat Moonlight in most of the
other categories the latter movie is nominated in. So, to make up for that, I predict that
Moonlight will win best Adapted Screenplay over movies such as Hidden Figures and Fences.
This is not to say it doesn’t deserve it, but when dealing with the Oscars voter psychology always
has to be taken into account.
The 5 movies this year are actually kind of amazing but only Moonlight can win. Fences did not translate well to the big screen, the drama of it works better as a play. Hidden Figures seemed as though it was too rushed and made at the last minute. Arrival and Lion are good movies with good screenplays but they don't have the kind of subject that attracts Oscars. Moonlight is honestly amazing. Barry Jenkins poured his heart and soul into it and, while he won't win the Director Award, he will probably win this one
